Why Keep Cut Flowers Away from Fruit and Tobacco Smoke?

Placement is not only about sunlight and HVAC drafts. A MAFF regional guide notes that flowers are sensitive to ethylene and advises keeping them away from fruit and tobacco smoke.

Do not crowd ripening fruit and flowers together

Ethylene production varies by fruit and ripeness, but avoid placing a vase and fruit bowl together in a confined area. If both are on a dining table, give them as much separation as practical.

Avoid tobacco smoke

Do not display flowers where smoke is present or regularly drifts in. Choose a smoke-free room rather than relying only on short periods of ventilation.

Remove deteriorating flowers and leaves

The same guide notes that wilted flowers and damaged leaves can also release ethylene. Remove them so the remaining flowers can be maintained separately.

Combine this with the placement basics

Also keep the arrangement cool and away from direct sun and direct heating or cooling airflow.
