No Vase? How to Use a Clean Bottle Safely

If no vase is available, a thoroughly washed beverage bottle or jar can serve as a temporary flower container. A MAFF regional guide also notes that a clean empty bottle can be reused.

Remove odor and residue

Wash the bottom and rim. Avoid containers that retain oil, sugar, or strong fragrance, and rinse away all detergent.

Match stability to the flowers

Tall flowers can tip a narrow, light bottle. Divide the stems, shorten them, or use a wide, heavier container. Keep it away from busy walkways.

Choose an opening you can clean

A narrow neck supports a few stems but may be hard to wash. Do not use a container when a brush cannot reach residue inside.

Prevent confusion with drinks

Keep flower containers and diluted flower food away from beverages. Also place them out of reach of children and pets.
