Leaves left in vase water can contribute to poor water quality. MAFF guidance includes removing lower foliage before arranging cut flowers.
Decide the waterline first
Choose the intended water depth and hold the stems beside the vase. Remove only the leaves that would fall below that line.
Protect the stem surface
Pulling hard can damage the stem. Support the leaf at its base and use clean scissors when it does not release easily. Ask the florist how to handle thorny stems.
Remove fallen foliage too
If leaves or petals later fall into the water, take them out. During a water change, also check the submerged stems for slime.
Healthy upper leaves can remain
There is no need to strip every leaf. Keep healthy foliage above the water when it suits the arrangement and the vase remains stable.
