Care is not identical for every flower, but a simple sequence helps when you bring a bouquet home.

Five first steps
- Remove the wrapping to prevent trapped moisture.
- Remove leaves that would sit below the waterline.
- Check the flower and stem before choosing how to cut it.
- Use a clean vase with fresh water at an appropriate depth.
- Keep the flowers away from direct sun, heat, and strong air-conditioning.
Not every stem should be cut diagonally
Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries shows different examples: a firm rose stem cut diagonally under water and a softer sunflower stem cut straight across. Its guidance also gives shallow-water examples such as gerberas and deeper-water examples such as roses. Condition, variety, and shop preparation matter, so follow the florist’s advice.
Replace water instead of topping it up
Clean the vase and the submerged part of the stems when changing the water. If you use a commercial flower food, dilute it exactly as the label directs and prevent children or pets from drinking it.
Avoid unverified household mixtures
Concentrations and safety cannot be generalized for mixtures made with sugar, bleach, or detergent. This guide does not recommend them; use a product intended for cut flowers or ask the shop.
